The inaugural adidas Rose City Showcase in 2003 was a three-day event averaging 700 fans daily including "Hoop Junkies" of all ages and from all parts of the Portland metro area to support Portland's own Inner City Players youth basketball programs. More than 50 volunteers worked nonstop to insure that all areas of the event and hospitality were executed efficiently and professionally. Grant High School provided the perfect location for the event. It allowed a variety of socioeconomic groups from the entire "503" to gather and enjoy exciting summer basketball in a safe family environment. Head basketball coach Tony Broadus and his staff welcomed the Rose City Showcase and were a pleasure to work with.
Eight teams from Seattle, Houston, Oakland, Atlanta and Portland played one game a day during the weekend. adidas had a relationship with six of the teams and Nike sponsors the other two. Standouts at the innaugral RCS included Dwight Howard, Josh Smith, Brandon Rush and Marvin Williams. All in all 10 of the top 15 players in the country was represented in 2003!
The 2004 edition of the RCS continued to build the reputation of the tournament showcasing rising talents like Gerald Henderson, Jawan Carter and Javaris Crittendon as well as local talent like Kevyn Green. The tournament was growing and the field of 8 top nationally recognized prep teams made up a field considered to be the most talented group of basketball players ever assembled in this Portland ever. The momentum continued in 2006 with top prospects like Kyle Singler (Duke), Kevin Love (UCLA), O.J. Mayo (USC) and Michael Beasley (Kansas State) in the running for tournament MVP.
By 2007 the Rose City Showcase was on the move to becoming one of the top invitational tournaments in the country. The tournament format expanded to cover 17U- 11U, which will began to bring some of the "NATIONS NEXT" to Portland to join the expanded, exclusive tournament. Players like Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers, who led Kansas to the 2008 NCAA Championship, all had one thing in common - they participated in the Rose City Showcase.
By 2008 RCS participants included the likes of NBA players Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic), Josh Smith (Atlanta Hawks), Marvin Williams (Atlanta Hawks), Martell Webster (Portland Trailblazers), Randolph Morris (New York Knicks), Spencer Hawes (Sacramento Kings), Marcus Williams (Los Angeles Clippers), Javaris Crittendon (Memphis Grizzlies), Ricky Sanchez (Denver Nuggetts) and Gerald Green (Houston Rockets). Also in 2008 the field was expanded to include brackets for 9U and up.
By 2009 the classes of 2012 and 2013, including players like D’Vante Smith-Rivera, Trey Lyles, James Robinson, BeeJay Anya, Justin Anderson, Jamal Ferguson, Samuel Cassell, Aaron Parham, Roschon Prince, Torren Jones, Anthony January Jr. and Anrio Adams would leave their mark on the tournament. RCS IX also saw the debut of Nike as the title sponsor bring the "Oregon connection" full circle. The Rose City Showcase IX field included 144 of the top boys AAU teams ages 9U - 17U and continued the tradition of featuring the NATIONS NEXT on our exclusive Portland stage.
All Super 17 games are now being played at Portland Community College’s Cascade Campus. The other divisional games were played at Lewis & Clark College and Beaverton Hoop YMCA as the event expanded.
